Simrex X900 Drone Review

Simrex X900 Review 2023 – is the Simrex X900 quadcopter worth the money? Review of features, pricing, flight duration, battery, camera and more.

A lot of people want to own a good drone but aren’t keen on spending much for a unit. Maybe they simple have a tight budget or are simply testing the waters. While there are plenty of cheap options out there, many of them are nothing more than disposable toys that break down after a few flights. Getting something in the sub-$100 category that actually provides decent performance is a difficult task but there are a few options that fit the bill. For example, you can check out the Simrex X900 Drone which packs nifty features for just $80.

Build

This is a sleek quadcopter with foldable arms. Once folded, you can slip the unit into a big jacket pocket with dimensions of just 130mm x 90mm x 45mm. Go ahead and travel with this without worries. The package comes with a controller, a phone holder, a charging cable, a battery, 4 spare propellers, 4 propeller guards, and a product manual. Everything is neatly packed in a box that could be given as a gift. It’s a shame that there is no carrying case so you would have to get one separately. It holds up well to crashes, with the spares providing extra confidence.

Camera

At this price, you really can’t expect much from the camera. It’s nice that Simrex installed a 1080p shooter in this one despite the $80 tag. This may not be the most clear or most vivid camera out there but it will give you decent images for your amateur films. It has a wide angle of 110 degrees to pack more in a single frame. If you need a drone for high school projects or personal enjoyment, then this will certainly fit the bill without breaking the bank. The footage can be streamed to a paired phone via Wi-Fi. Just download the free app to get it going. Note that the video can be shaky, especially in strong wind. Keep the drone close to prevent signal interference.

Battery

This drone uses a lithium ion battery rated at 3.7V with a capacity of 1,200 mAh. This is quite large for this class, thus allowing the unit to fly for up to 15 minutes at a time. Most cheap drones can barely make it past 10 minutes so this is a great extended life. Charging time will take an hour and a half. On the other hand, only one battery is supplied with the package and it is not possible to purchase spares online. Advanced users will be able to find ways to hack a spare battery but beginners will have a much harder time.

Controls

The Simrex X900 Drone can be controlled using a 2.4GHz radio frequency wireless remote control. Just like others, it has two thumb sticks for directional control. There are buttons for power, headless mode, altitude hold, one key take off, and more. One of the few downsides of this drone is the short transmitter range. You need to keep the unit flying with 80-120 meters or else it will move out of your control. You could also use the phone to control it if the drone is within the Wi-Fi range. There are three speed modes with the lowest setting being best for beginners.

Features

A major complaint about beginner drones is that they are hard to control. Thus the frequent crashes and endless frustrations that make people quit altogether. The Simrex X900 makes the experience smooth and stress-free by incorporating technologies that make flight easier. There is a one key take off and landing feature so novices can fly right out of the box. There is a second camera that looks at the bottom to provide optical flow positioning to have a better lock on the height and position of the drone. It can hover steady in the air while you take a shot of your subjects.

If you want to do aerial acrobatics, then try the 360-degree flips and rolls. You can do it in any direction to avoid obstacles, add cool shots, or just impress your friends. Since this has a short range, the one-key return is a crucial feature that lets you call it back when it goes too far. Headless mode makes flying a breeze since you don’t have to keep track of the drone’s orientation. It will move in relation to your point of view. The blinking lights make it more visible from afar, though these could be brighter.

What People are Saying

Users love the fact that the X900 is small, foldable, and portable. It’s the perfect companion for those on the go. The dual remote control is a nice touch, though most still prefer the dedicated transmitter. The camera is pretty decent though not for serious productions. It is easy to fly as long as you are within range and the wind is not too strong. Flight times are long but it would have been better if a spare was provided.

Comparison with Other Drones

The Simrex X900 Drone is a good option but if you want something that is every more budget-friendly, then take a look at its younger brother the X300C Mini Drone. At $40, this one has a 720p camera, smaller size, 3D flips, and headless mode. However, it can only fly a maximum of 10 minutes and the range drops down to 45 meters. The Drocon Bugs 3 is similarly priced at $70 but you need to provide a separate camera. It’s good for people who already own a GoPro and would like to use that to capture high quality videos. It has a 7.4V 1,800 mAh battery that can last between 15 and 20 minutes. Brushless motors prevent overheating. Operating range is about 300 meters.
