Syma X22W Mini Drone Review

Syma X22W Drone Review 2020 – is the Syma X22W quadcopter worth the money? Review of features, pricing, flight duration, battery, camera and more.

Drones have become the “It” toy of the moment, having risen in popularity in recent years. Thanks to better technology, enhanced stabilization mechanisms, and improved image-capture functions, drones have become indispensable as tools for hobbyists and professional photographers/videographers. If you are in the market for a drone of your own, let’s take a look at one option you might want to consider: the Syma X22W.

What’s in a Drone?

When buying a drone, most people look for a few common features, such as size, stability, control, range, reliability (at high altitudes or when carrying certain types of cargo), video/still capture capabilities, and cost. Using these features as our reference, let’s examine if the Syma X22W matches the demand.

back to menu ↑

Size

The X22W is a pocket-sized wonder, meant to meet the current market demand for mini-sized drones. These drones are designed to be lightweight and easy to fly. It is a good beginner drone, made for easy control by people who are newcomers to the drone-flying trend. It is easy to carry and compact enough not to require plenty of space to store. Weighing at just 7 ounces, this drone is perfect for even young teens and children (with adult supervision) to operate.

Stability

The drone has a built-in Gravity Sensor which controls the stability of the drone by making the correct vertical and horizontal adjustments on the smartphone using either the Syma Go App or the Syma Fly. Either app can be downloaded on an Android or iOs.

There is also one feature that is pretty neat in ensuring that the drone delivers good, stable performance. It comes with a built-in barometer. That’s right, one that will sense any changes in the level of pressure in the air. If there is indeed a change in air pressure, the drone will adjust itself automatically to ensure stability. Furthermore, it has a 6-axis gyroscope that keeps the drone flying parallel to the ground, making it easy to control.

Control

The X22W features an Altitude Hold control that allows the drone to hover automatically. With this feature, the drone stays put wherever it may be even if the pilot’s hands stray off the controller. You are assured that the drone will not crash or fly off should you get distracted.

You can also switch the drone in Track-Controlled mode. Plan your flight track using a smartphone that is in sync with the drone, then watch it fly in exactly the direction and route you want.

Range

The X22W’s range is a little limited at just 25 meters. It is good enough for simple photography or videography, or for practice drone-flying. However, if you need a drone that flies farther, you may have to look elsewhere for a unit that has a better flight range.

Video/Image Capture

The X22W has a decent 720P high-def camera built into the unit. It is capable of taking pictures and videos and record them as high quality images. It can also transmit in real time – perfect if you want to scout an area, capture an image quickly, or just view a well-posed selfie right away.

Reliability

In terms of battery power, the X22W can stay off the ground for less than 10 minutes but that is rather common among drones in its class. It does come with a spare battery, which doubles its flying time. It flies true within range and is quite easy to control. No, it cannot be used to deliver cargo, although it would probably be useful for carrying small, very light items.

Price

Available at around $55, this drone is quite affordable, although it is not the cheapest in the market. There are comparable drones at the same price range with similar basic features, while there are others that may carry better features. However, at this price and with its simple yet reasonable capabilities, you do get good value out of the X22W.

Other Features

The X22W starts off easily. It only requires a single key to start and to land. It can also be controlled to perform a 360° flip and roll with a single press of a button. In the looks department, the X22W is available in red. It is not tactically significant but consider this: the color makes it easy to spot while it is in flight and it is a matte finish, which helps prevent that dreaded reflection from the sun should you fly it outdoors.
