Syma X9 Drone Review

Syma X9 Drone Review 2020 – is the Syma X9 quadcopter worth the money? Review of features, pricing, flight duration, battery, camera and more.

The Syma X9 Drone is an RC toy that is a world away from a traditional toy quadcopter. It boasts a set of driving wheels, along with four propellers and motors, that allow it to glide on the ground and fly up in the sky. Of course, multi purpose RC toys have been seen before — the Q202 aircraft carrier from WLToys, which was released quite recently, can travel by water, as well as by land and by air. Also, the UDI U841 was one of the first quadcopters to offer land and air capabilities.

Nonetheless, although these earlier RC toys were meant to be more versatile, their performance on land left a lot to be desired. In contrast, the X9 seems to be a genuine attempt, from a Chinese manufacturer, to create a flying drone that can drive well on the ground. This product is available in white, red and black and it sells for $48.99, with complimentary shipping.

Model Information

The Syma X9 Drone arrives in a slender cardboard box, with lightweight plastic packaging inside. This is a bit worrying, as far as the drone’s safety during transit is concerned, because the container does not protect it particularly well. After you receive the box though, you will discover the following items inside:

-The drone itself, completely assembled
-A radio controller
-A specially designed battery
-An instruction set
-A spare propeller set

The transmitter included with the X9 shares similarities with the ones used with the X5SW and X5C models. The X9 does not come with a camera, and users are advised not to modify the quadcopter to attach one. Doing so would greatly impede the balance, drive time and flight time of the drone. Moreover, making modifications voids the manufacturer’s warranty, so you are taking a big gamble if you attempt them.

Product Features

The Syma X9 Drone looks like a cross between a quadrocopter – with its’ fluid design and curved surfaces intended to reduce drag, and a racing car – with several aerodynamic characteristics. The product specifications are listed below:

-Two in one Fly and Drive — Works on the ground and in the air
-Throwing Flight — Enables the RC toy to be thrown into the air to start flying
-Wind resistant and capable of flying outdoors and indoors
-2.4 GHz Radio Control — Drive or fly with numerous RCs simultaneously, for a long distance, with little interference
-Quadcopter weight is 10.2g/3.6oz, so FAA registration is not needed
-Six AXIS GYRO — An advanced control system that makes flying more stable
-3D Flips — Can perform 360 degree flips at the press of a button

Although the design material of the X9 is mainly plastic, the build quality seems fairly rugged and solid for its’ weight and size. The simple propellers are meant to flex and bow, while directing the air below, so that tricks and stunts can be performed in midair. In addition, they maintain the flight performance and balance of the drone. The X9 has a couple of LEDs that enable you to distinguish one end from the other, particularly at night — green on the back and red on the front.

Two speed settings are offered — Low and High. The lower speed is useful for novices, or when traveling through difficult spaces with lots of obstacles. The higher speed makes the X9 enjoyable to fly. These speed settings also impact the X9’s speed when it is traveling by land. The 600mAh 3.7V battery gives the X9 a flying time of roughly six to eight minutes. This is considerably longer in Land Mode though. Syma has opted to not to include a ‘Return to Home’ feature or Headless Mode with the X9.

The X9 performs better in Land Mode than any other multi purpose RC toy. Its’ rear wheel drive corresponds proportionally to your stick movements. Once you set the throttle stick to zero, the drone changes to Land Mode automatically. When the stick is pushed up it deactivates Land Mode and starts the propellers, as the quadcopter switches to Flying Mode. The radio controller is a regular Syma model, which works with other products from the manufacturer. The controls are user friendly, with buttons that are simple to hold together and comfortable to push.

What Others are Saying

Currently, the Syma X9 Drone is rated 3.6 out of five stars on Amazon, based on seventy reviews. Most customers agree that the X9 flies well in quadcopter mode, and has good stability while airborne. Some customers who own the Syma X5C drone say that the X9 has similar flight characteristics — extremely consistent and smooth. Nonetheless, most also say that the X9 has noticeably less power than the X5 quadcopters, because of its’ heavier weight. When flying the X9 in light winds outdoors, users have reported that the drone becomes rather ungainly and struggles, although not as badly as the Q202 aircraft carrier from WLToys. The only other complaint about the X9 from customers relates to the cheap tires made from low density foam. These tires can absorb impact effectively, however they lack the grip and durability of normal rubber tires. Reportedly, the tires easily come off, particularly when the drone is driven aggressively.

The Verdict

The Syma X9 Drone is a nice, enjoyable small quadcopter, with many features, and it will keep users plenty occupied. It is easy to maintain and fly, quick and agile, and it can serve as a remote control car. Although it has some negative points, spare parts are simple to buy and its’ price is highly affordable. Therefore, this drone is ideal for novice pilots, or children who want to learn how to operate a quadcopter.
