The UPair One is an unexpectedly cheap, yet advanced, 4K drone from the Chinese manufacturer GTEN Innovations. In contrast to other models of a similar price, the UPair One isn’t a bog standard budget quadcopter, with inexpensive materials and a mediocre camera. This review of the UPair One Drone will cover all key aspects of this excellent, affordable quadcopter.
The Main Features
The remote control on the UPair has a full color, seven inch LCD display monitor. This enables you to control the drone easily and get a clear picture of everything it surveys. Having a touchscreen controller is far better than attaching your own smartphone or tablet. Another convenient feature of the display monitor is that it’s not necessary to install an app to control the device or watch videos — everything you require is built in and included. The drone has a gimbal control dial and a couple of buttons for recording and capturing videos and images.
This model can be bought with a 4k camera or a 2.7k camera. It costs about $50 more to get the 4k camera. Unless you take photographs for a living, it won’t make any difference which camera you choose, because they both shoot in High Definition. The drone can capture images at sixteen Mega Pixels using the 4k camera, and eight Mega Pixels using the 2.7k camera.
The 4k camera has a Panasonic sensor installed, whereas the sensor on the 2.7k camera is a Sony CMOS. Both of these electronic brands are reputable, so you can be sure that the cameras will produce good quality images. Each perform their tasks effectively, and the 120 degree wide angle lens ensures that you will never miss a shot.
A two axis gimbal is used to stabilize the camera. Although this is not as effective as a three axis gimbal, it still prevents any sudden shakes that could ruin the video footage or image. Most 4k camera drones retail for about $1000, so the inclusion of such a camera on the UPair One makes it a steal for the price you pay.
-Flight Times and Design
The headless mode makes flying an absolute breeze. The drone also has good auto return features that make it user friendly for novices. With regards to the video footage, the views are amazing. The footage is flawless and there is no noticeable interference. The drone takes breathtaking videos and images with both (4k or 2.7k) cameras. Intelligent LiPo batteries are used in this model, which prevent it from overcharging. There are four LED bulbs to indicate when the batteries are depleted or topped up, and this allows for longer flight times.
While the manufacturer claims that the average flight time is about nineteen minutes, you will not get as long as this in all likelihood. The majority of users report flight times of sixteen to eighteen minutes. Notwithstanding, this is still highly respectable for a drone of this price. Of course, most people would want more than nineteen minutes to fly an advanced drone, so it is always wise to purchase additional batteries.
-Safety Features and Intelligent Flights
The UPair One’s return home features are exceptional, because as well as providing safety they also conserve the battery. There is a switch on the controller that activates the return home setting, the model will also revert to its’ original flight if the signal is lost or the battery runs low. These things are intended to ensure that the quadcopter is easy for hobbyists and novice pilots to operate.
Also, these features are intended to reduce the chance of losing the drone mid flight. This does happen occasionally, particularly with drones that stray out of view. Apart from the different return home features, the other user friendly features include headless mode, altitude hold and position hold. Headless mode makes drone piloting an intuitive and natural experience, while altitude hold and position hold make aerial photography straightforward. Needless to say, these are all big selling points.
The UPair One Drone Versus Other Models
Due to the big price difference, it would not be fair to compare the UPair One Drone with the DJI Phantom 3 or Phantom 4 Pro, even though they all have highly responsive controllers and cameras of a similar quality. Therefore, the best model to use for comparison purposes is the DJI Phantom 3 Standard, because it is in the same price range and has similar features. The DJI Phantom 3 has the benefit of a longer flight range. Nonetheless, the 4K version of the UPair One has a superior camera, so it comes down to the customer’s needs and preferences.
Pros and Cons
The Positives: The UPair One has an excellent controller, with a large display for first person view. Moreover, it has a respectable eighteen minute flight time, which is perfectly adequate for hobbyists. Better still, you can select the type of camera you want – the 2.7K or 4K – which allows you to reduce the amount you spend on the product, if you do not require the Ultra High Definition one.
The Negatives: While the UPair One’s design is fantastic, the same can not be said of its’ build quality. That’s not meant to be a huge criticism – the build quality matches that of many other similarly priced models — however, it is not on a par with the DJI’s Phantom series. Aside from this, the UPair One’s range is a little disappointing. It reaches just a few hundred meters, which is rather mediocre.
Final Thoughts About the UPair One Drone
The UPair One breaks new ground, with regards to 4K aerial photography price points. In addition, it impresses with good flight times and battery life for its’ price. Furthermore, its’ automatic modes and intuitive control features make it user friendly for even the most inexperienced of customers. Of course, there are some drawbacks – like a limiting gimbal and less than stellar flight range — however it serves as an ideal drone for semi professional users.
